The 2nd Annual Open Web Awards Live Gala:
In a post earlier this week, we mentioned the concept of “Tweetbacks” – essentially the idea of showing Twitter activity relating to blog posts in the same way that comments are displayed on most blogs today. Much to our delight, this feature has already arrived, via Dan Zarrella, who has built exactly what Mashable guest contributor Rachel Cunliffe envisioned.
What Tweetbacks does, after adding a line of code to your blog template, is display all of the Tweets that link to that blog post. It does this by finding mentions of the URL on Twitter, accounting for the top 5 link shortening services like TinyURL and Bit.ly. The result is a listing of Tweets about your blog post that looks much like regular blog comments:
In other words, if we had Tweetbacks installed on this blog (which we might someday soon!), and you tweeted “check out this awesome mashable post – http://tinyurl.com/tweetbacksrules,” that Tweet would show up in our comment area. This is truly fantastic – while we get a lot of comments on most Mashable posts, it pales in comparison to the volume of tweets that some of our entries generate.
Twitter CEO Evan Williams was pretty excited about the development too, tweeting “@danzarrella just launched something I had drawn on our whiteboard a couple weeks ago: http://tinyurl.com/9e4ank” Zarrella has already added a WordPress plugin to the service for easy setup.
If you enable Tweetbacks, let us know about it in the comments!

Flektor, the slideshow creation tool that MySpace acquired in 2007, might be on the chopping block. A source close to the company tells us that employees were informed in a meeting today that Flektor is being dissolved as of this Friday.
The acquisition of Flektor made a lot of sense back at the peak of widget mania. MySpace was a huge outlet for posting widgets, and by acquiring Flektor, they’d also be a leading destination for creating them. At the time, we wrote: “[Flektor] allows everything from photo hosting, slideshow, video editing, web cam broadcasting (ala UStream), in-stream quizzes and polls as well as IM and media storage. For something that tries to be so much, they do fairly good job at it.”
Alas, in 2009, it’s all about identity management (MySpaceID) for third-party websites and in-house application platforms. Thus, as MySpace attempts to cut costs along with everyone else in the new media industry, eliminating Flektor wouldn’t be a huge surprise to us, though we’d expect the technology to still be used in some capacity, perhaps as integrated applications on MySpace (the company’s slideshow and poll apps can already be found there).
We’ve asked MySpace for comment and will update when we hear something.
Update (12:20PT): Another source confirms the rumor, noting that the changes are part of a broader plan to integrate Flektor technology on MySpace. Additionally, the source says that “most” employees will still have jobs with the company.

We could have never predicted that our coverage of the iSteam iPhone app would result in a battle between apps that let you blow air on the mic to add steam, or fog-like effects to photos and backgrounds. But Tomy Schoenfeld, the guy behind the iFog app, obviously felt that we (mainly me) had done his app, which launched 10 days prior to iSteam, a huge injustice.
Schoenfeld’s decry, “I would appreciate if you could make changes to your original post and include a description of our application. this is a competitive market and we believe that better products, like iFog, should be promoted to make the public aware of it.” Competitive market, who knew? Well Tomy, we’ll give iFog its day in court, and we’ll let our readers (not me) decide the verdict.
iFog

On the positive side of things, iFog [iTunes link] comes pre-loaded with nicer background images, lets you select different brush sizes for writing on images, and has a fog-free writing feature for stealth messages that your friends can decipher once they fog up your phone with their breathe. You can also save photos to your library and take pictures from within the app.
Before you give your vote to iFog, consider the known issues like the fact that iFog doesn’t function as well in noisy environment, and occassionally shows a white screen while trying to switch backgrounds. Something I noticed is that the images aren’t as responsive to touch when attempting to access the options screen.
iSteam

In iSteam’s [iTunes link] favor are the beads of sweat that drip down your steamed-up screen, and the eclectic sound effects that accompany your drawing endeavors.
If saving photos, not being able to take a picture within the app, and creating secret messages are must haves, than iSteam might be a deal breaker for you. And for the superficial types, you might be turned off by iSteam’s interface, which looks like the ugly friend when compared side to side with iFog.
Winner Takes Fog (or Steam)
Now that you, the public, are aware of both iSteam and iFog. You tell us, which app steals your steamy desires?
Which app would you rather use (ie. blow on)?

The 2nd Annual Open Web Awards Live Gala:
Here’s an example of a story coming full circle: Amazon invests in BillMeLater, BillMeLater is added as a payment option on Amazon, eBay buys BillMeLater, and today, Amazon pulls the plug on BillMeLater. The service, which lets shoppers buy stuff online without a credit card, will no longer be offered as a payment option by Amazon in the New Year.
The move, presumably, is both a competitive one and a response to the current financial crisis. While BillMeLater does look at one’s credit history before allowing a purchase to go through, growing concerns that customers ultimately won’t be able to make the payment on their purchases likely gave Amazon enough pause to pull the plug.
Not to mention, it sends a big shot across the bow of eBay, who paid more than $800 million for BillMeLater back in October. According to one estimate, Amazon accounted for 10-15% of BillMeLater’s total transaction volume.
At the time of the acquisition, BillMeLater seemed like a natural fit for eBay’s payment processing business, which includes PayPal. It still probably is, but with credit so hard to come by, you have to wonder if eBay bought it at the worst possible time, for far too much money. In other words, it could be a very long time until they see a positive return on the investment.
