Setup Your Own Job Interview With MeetingWave

Posted by: Adam Ostrow
in News, Events

MeetingWave is an interesting new twist on the MeetUp concept. As opposed to organizing group events, the idea is to specify who you’d like to meet, post an invite, and accept or reject requests to attend. For example, let’s say you’ve got an idea for a Web application and want to meet someone that can develop it. You can post an invite for coffee to MeetingWave, and then developers can take you up on the offer by indicating they wish to attend.

As a meeting organizer, you approve the people who indicate they want to attend your meeting, giving you control over who shows up, and eliminating the awkwardness and waste of time that could ensue with public meet ups. Poking around the site, most of the listings so far seem to focus on business networking of some sort, ranging from simple meetups of people with similar interests to professionals looking for jobs hoping to lure recruiters.

I like the idea of MeetingWave – it eliminates a lot of the complexities and back-and-forth that can ensue when posting an open-ended networking invite on Craigslist or Meetup. Of course, there aren’t nearly as many events listed, with a few dozen meetings scheduled over the coming days in most metro areas. Additionally, the site would benefit from better integration of data and links to other social networking profiles so you can get a better idea of who someone is before accepting an invite.

Ultimately, MeetingWave might not fill a big enough need in the crowded online events space to be viable in the long-run, and the big event sites could make a few tweaks to support similar functionality. But if you’re looking for a job, it might be worth an investment of a few minutes by posting a recurring meeting and scouring the opportunities on the site.

BlogWorld Expo and New Media Expo Merge

Posted by: Mark 'Rizzn' Hopkins
in mashable, News, Events

bwe-logo Two of the biggest conferences for New Media practicioners and independent content producers yesterday announced a merger.  The BlogWorld Expo and the New Media Expo are merging into one “mega new media event.” As someone who considers himself a bit of a fanboy for New Media, this is the most interesting major development for my area of interest I’ve seen in a while.

The announcement was made yesterday on the BlogWorldExpo news blog, and went to great detail to describe ostrow-hartline-bwethe personal history between BWE founder Rick Calvert and PNME founder Tim Bourquin, and the way the names changed to overlap and coincide over the years.

The union is a testament to the growth of both Blogging and Podcasting to a much larger world only best described by the term “New Media,” as well as the phenomenal success of the conferences themselves.

The new event will be called “BlogWorld & New Media Expo 2009,” and presumably both conference websites will be good places to check for further information (www.blogworldexpo.com and www.newmediaexpo.com).
